TuxedoKat is an abstract artist working with resin and broken glass creating mosaics since 2008. From windows of an industrial mill in Concord N.C., TuxedoKat discovered a flat, heavier glass with an awe-inspiring indigo tint in 2019. This repurposed glass created the stunning blue backsplash installed at Southern Strain Brewery.

The mosaic is a recycled art masterpiece and TuxedoKat pulled it off in several steps. First, she used LEDs to create a “haloing” illumination effect in the perimeter of the wooden footprint. Second, shimmering metallic paint was painted onto the wooden footprint. This step enhanced the reflection of the blue color from the glass. Then, broken pieces of indigo glass were assembled into a mosaic design upon three clear glass panels. Then, resin sealed the three mosaics. Finally, the three panels were installed vertically onto the footprint and covered the LEDs.
TuxedoKat’s glass art mosaic process began in 2008. Bombay Sapphire Gin bottles were collected from a local lounge bar and smashed in paper bags and the broken pieces carefully assembled onto empty picture frames. This process was recorded in 2017 by Big Toe Media for a “One person, One Idea” video series.
